Join us for a very special edition of Masterworks with horror film powerhouse Gary Sherman, interviewed by horror writer and editor of Rue Morgue, Andrea Subissati.

Chicago-born, Gary Sherman is a feature film and television director, screenwriter and producer. He is best known for his prolific work in the horror genre, directing films such as Death Line, Dead & Buried, and Poltergeist III. His movies are distinguished by their dark, edgy and upsetting subject matter, all the while being highly entertaining.

His first dramatic feature, Death Line delivered a surprising amount of heart-wrenching pathos along with the expected gore and chills. Sherman followed with the offbeat, excellent and original zombie shocker Dead & Buried.

He followed that film with action-thriller "Vice Squad" and later "Wanted: Dead or Alive" starring Rutger Hauer and Gene Simmons. These two supremely tough and stirring productions confirm Sherman's exceptional skill and aptitude for crafting solid and satisfying films.

His next project was Poltergeist III for MGM, which was shot on location in Chicago. Sherman is particularly proud of the special effects he and his team created "in camera," rather than optically or digitally.

In 2000, Death Line was chosen by a panel of British critics as one of "The Ten Most Important British Horror Films of the 20th Century,” It was subsequently screened at Lincoln Center.

Subsequently, for a 2006 foray into an experiment with new media, 39 - A Film by Carroll McKane.

Sherman’s television writing and directing credits include After the Shock, The Glow and series episodes including “Wind on Water,” "Poltergeist: The Legacy,” and "Sable." He created the TV series "Missing Persons" in the mid-90s.

Sherman studied design and photography at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Sherman began his career making music clips and short movies, the early precursors to MTV music videos. Sherman made his feature debut as a director with the documentary "The Legend of Bo Diddley."
