Chicago Filmmakers has a five decade history of serving the local film community. Starting out as an exhibition and community space for experimental filmmakers and artists, the organization has since grown into a multi-faceted media arts organization that serves a wider community through year-round educational, exhibition, funding and professional development opportunities. Empowering local filmmakers and creating community around the love of cinema is what we’re all about.

What I love about Chicago Filmmakers is the array of classes and workshops offered. For most of us who work full time or have other responsibilities, Chicago Filmmakers provides resources and classes that not only work during COVID (via Zoom), but also connect us to others who have a similar interest in the film industry. CF is valuable not only to those pursuing a career in film, but also to people who simply have a great passion and love for cinema and wish to learn more. I think being able to utilize CF’s resources for either professional or personal interest is hugely valuable. Film study is not known for its inherent accessibility or affordability, but CF makes this possible for so many in Chicagoland who need an outlet for their creative interests. I look forward to taking more classes with Chicago Filmmakers and expanding my knowledge and experience!

Julie Englander’s class Developing the Documentary came at the perfect time for me. I have the film production skills, but I don’t necessarily know the business side of documentary filmmaking, such as writing grant proposals. In her class, Julie took us step-by-step through the proposal process and gave us great feedback every week. Now that I have completed this class, I feel like I have the confidence to write my documentary proposal.

[The Chicago Digital Media Production Fund] has been so pivotal in getting us started. The faith that Chicago Filmmakers shows for indie filmmakers who have a bold idea that is community-driven and inclusive is huge.

I think being in a place where you can gain hands-on experience is invaluable. I’ve been directing my own films, but since I’m self-taught, I know there are gaps in my knowledge of filmmaking and how to communicate on set. So it’s really important for me to work with other people and see how they work on set and get that practical experience. The hands-on experience is great. I really appreciate that aspect.

It is absolutely wonderful getting to work for an organization that inspires and empowers students from all over the world. Students come to Chicago Filmmakers to get an affordable and well-balanced education from industry professionals and I’m grateful to be a part of this team!

After getting a grant from Chicago Filmmakers, all the different parts came together and it became the project we really wanted it to be. Chicago Filmmakers helped the film realize its full potential.

A really important aspect of the Chicago Digital Media Production Fund is that there’s no hidden agenda, there’s no creative, political or cultural box that you’re restricted into as a result of the grant.

Last spring I took Adobe Premiere because I was going to Senegal to film interviews and to start a new documentary. I really needed a crash course in editing and this class really helped. I’m thankful for this school and the classes that you offer. The professors have lots of experience, so you feel confident that you’re getting the best possible education without having to go to university.

Chicago Filmmakers helped me grow as a creator and provided opportunities to connect and network with other film professionals. The support I’ve received from the organization is immeasurable.

It’s really nice to learn with people who are so different but come here with the same passion for film. I think everyone has such different creative energies and ideas which makes for a great environment to be in. One minute the class is thinking about 1770s France, the next minute it’s a comic book character, and then we’re talking about the adoption story that I came up with.
