EL CAMPO

"El Campo" is a PBS documentary that uncovers the untold history of Mexican immigrant railroad boxcar communities in Aurora, Illinois, through the stories of the Perez, Nila, and Gonzalez families. Living in railroad boxcar camps during the 1920s, these families built resilient communities whose contributions helped shape American society. Among them is Pete Perez, who was born in the railroad boxcar community and went on to become the first Mexican American to play for the Chicago Bears. Through personal interviews, archival photographs, historical research, and original stop-motion animation, "El Campo" reveals a powerful story of perseverance, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of Mexican American families.
