SANKOFA CHICAGO: THE UNTOLD

Sankofa Chicago: The Untold is the second installment in the award-winning Sankofa Chicago documentary series, exploring gaps in how American history is taught and whose stories are often left out. Centered on Chicago Public Schools, a district taking steps to expand inclusive history education, the film examines both the progress being made and the work still ahead. Bringing together educators, historians, students, families, and community members, the documentary offers a multigenerational look at how history is learned, remembered, and passed down. It explores how Black history and the histories of other historically underrepresented communities are taught and how a fuller understanding of the past can shape education, identity, belonging, and civic understanding.

The documentary will begin national distribution through PBS in February 2027, with a three-year public television distribution period. The project will extend beyond public television through educational outreach, community screenings, public engagement, and resources designed to bring these conversations to schools and communities across the country.
