SOCIETY OF MOTION
Andrew Kim/ 2015 / 3 min/ sound/ 16mm
Once more a turn to that which can not be fixed: this ocean of images ... As always mindfulness provides a type of golden solvent. Keep your eyes on the flame ... even when they are closed.
SEA 404 (MATERIAL IMMATERIAL #2)
Cherlyn Hsing-Hsin Liu/ 2019 / 3 min/ sound/ 16mm
Inspired by photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto's series Seascapes, and French philosopher Jean Baudrillard's essay The Vanishing Point of Communication. It questions the condition wherein the computer mediates our experience, paralleling Sugimoto's observation: media has transformed the way we see the world.
WATER, CLOCK
Zack Parrinella / 2021 / 8 min/ sound/ 16mm
An interpretation of the velocity of our modern world. Industry, building, and "progress" of humankind onto newer and newer frontiers of innovation never cease. At least, if anything, we can seek some beauty within the absurdity of all the perpetual movement constantly surrounding us.
GATHERING MOSS
Erin Espelie/ 2018 / 5 min/ silent/ 16mm
"The world now sacrifices everything to speed. Quiet seems to be regarded as a detestable condition to be expurgated by any means which applied science can devise." -F. Percy Smith (dir. Gathering Moss, 1933).
TATTVA
Kalpana Subramanian/ 2018 / 5 min/ sound/ digital
'Tattva' (in Sanskrit), alludes to 'thatness' and the fundamental elementality of all material existence. The film inquires into the material and non-material 'nature' of being. Projected onto skin, walls, bodies and spaces, images are drawn into a performance of light and breath, evoking a dissolution of boundaries between human-nonhuman, subject-object, art-science, matter and spirit.
IN OCULA OCULORUM
Anna Kipervaser / 2021 / 12 min/ sound/ digital
Interrogating the unknown and internal, the film contemplates stages of life and death from the point of view of our bodies and perceptual systems. It pushes the limits of intermittence, playing with our innate desire for continuity and cohesion.
TAPE MODERNE
Sylvain Chaussee / 2018 / 3 min/ silent/ 16mm
The film assembles loose ends of half a decade worth of scraps: stray tape from hundreds of prints, clipped tails that might otherwise pass before the gate only at the moment of creation. In giving rhythm and order to the products of daily work, it redeems the hidden labour of motion picture film production in all its repetition and variety, its color and charm.
THE ORDER OF REVELATION: SURAH AN-NAJM
Anna Kipervaser / 2017//2021 I 7 min/ silent/ 16mm
One section of a long-form, multi-part film translating/ trans- literating the Quran from Arabic to Visual in the order it was revealed, rather than the order in which it was canonized. It asks whether the revelatory nature of the Quran rests solely in its semantic content, or if revelation can be experienced on account of connections, collisions between letters, and sounds.
COLOR PRISM SUITE #1: OF LIFE AND FARCE
Zack Parrinella / 2016 / 3 min/ sound/ 16mm
The first piece of a trilogy which employs the axes of colors and musical tones to explore the simultaneous beauty and decay of the world we're immersed in. There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum. There are seven notes in a scale. Some coincidence. See what happens when they collide.
COLOR PRISM SUITE #2: WITHERING ENDS
Zack Parrinella / 2021 / 4 min/ sound/ 16mm
The second piece of a trilogy which employs the axes of colors and musical tones to explore the simultaneous beauty and decay of the world we are immersed in.
PLANE WAVE
Daniel Kelly/ 2016 / 9 min/ silent/ 16mm
An analog interactive. The film itself is a series of interference lenses attempting to focus the workings of the projector onto the exhibition screen. A love letter exposing the refractive nature of light bending around the sharp edges of metal thru tiny celluloid windows. Color appears from b&w film. Each viewing is unique to projector lamp and lens, exhibition space and projectionist.
PARTICULAR MATTER
Zack Parrinella / 2019-2023 / 15 min/ 3xl6mm /sound
This 3 projector performance piece uses direct to film animation techniques to represent images that find themselves situated somewhere between the cellular and the celestial. Sound by Kevin Corcoran and Jacob Felix Heule, recorded live in Oakland, CA on July 18th, 2023.
