David Goliath, an African-American sailor who deserts his ship when it arrives in Wales, finds a job in a mining community. While there, he wins over the music loving locals with his singing and shares in the struggles of their lives. Together, David Goliath and the Welsh miners organize against the powers that be to improve their working conditions. Starring Paul Robeson, Edward Chapman, Simon Lack, and Rachel Thomas. After World War I, the presence of African-Americans and African colonial subjects exploded in Europe, and a Black presence began to be felt in foreign cinema in the UK, Switzerland, France, Italy and, after World War II, in Japan. “Black Actors in Foreign Cinemapresents some of these films, which showcase Black actors in roles quite unlike the stereotypes prevailing in Hollywood.
