When 90% of the women of Iceland walked off the job and out of their homes one fall morning in 1975 refusing to work, cook, or take care of the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the “best place in the world to be a woman.” Told for the first time by the women themselves, and laced with humor and playful animation, The Day Iceland Stood Still (2024, 71 min.) is a subversive and inspiring story of female collective power. Directed by Emmy award-winning US filmmaker Pamela Hogan in collaboration with Icelandic producer Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, this is the true story of 24 hours that sparked a revolution that made Iceland a role model for gender parity and now inspires viewers everywhere to reimagine what's possible!

Followed by a post-screening discussion with Grima Irmudottir, associate producer of The Day Iceland Stood Still.

Co-presented by DOC CHICAGO and the Chicago Women's History Center.
