TIME PASSAGES

A film director “time travels” via his family archive as his mother’s health and memory decline from late-stage dementia. When deadly COVID hits her nursing home, will he resolve his fraught relationship to family and nation before it’s too late?

Synopsis

Time Passages charts the last months of my mother’s life as we struggled to connect during that deadly first pandemic summer. As one of her caregivers, we shared a bond unlike any other in our large Texas family— and it was complicated. Charting how her early desires were dashed, tracing our relationship to its finale, I “time travel” to better understand the family and nation to which we belong. A memento morí, the film is a reckoning with grief and loss of control. Below the Kodachrome smiles and grainy Super-8 films, I unearth difficult stories as an act of generational healing, and as a testament to love, intimacy, and singing— those things that carry us through the fire.
