OPUS HML
Opus HML is a documentary that traces the journey of some of the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Singers, a small choral ensemble that served as a lifeline for students at a highly-charged, fast-paced Miami high school in the 1980s. Through the eyes of the students the film chronicles the transformative impact of the choir, not just as an after-school activity, but as a source of acceptance, pride, and family for many young singers. As they traveled, competed, and performed for their school and community, the choir became a beacon of hope and inspiration, shaping the lives of its members in profound ways.
Opus HML aims to celebrate the power of arts education and highlight the importance of access to creative outlets for young people. By documenting the experiences of the HML Singers and their reunion 30 years later, the film seeks to illustrate how music and the arts can serve as a catalyst for personal growth, academic success, and lifelong connections. Through this exploration, the documentary also raises critical questions about the consequences of denying students access to arts education and the lasting impact it can have on individuals, schools, and communities.
