Documentary editors distill dozens – sometimes hundreds – of hours of raw footage into compelling, layered, human stories. How do they achieve this alchemy? Discover the tools, techniques, and traits that today’s non-fiction storytellers need. This course will help you navigate the wilderness of raw footage; manage a solid workflow for your media; understand and serve your director’s vision; and craft character arcs and scenes that feed an audience’s curiosity to learn more. Students are encouraged to come to class with raw footage from an edit-ready project, with an eye towards crafting a demo video for a documentary-in-progress. The final session will involve a critique and feedback screening of students’ work.
Suggested prerequisite: Developing the Documentary.
