This semi-autobiographical stirring coming-out story features Alike, a virginal 17-year-old African-American lesbian living in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. She sneaks out to nightclubs to let loose and be herself. But on the bus ride home, Alike sheds her baseball cap and polo shirt, puts her earrings back in, and tries to look like the feminine, obedient girl her conservative family expects. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward. Debut director Dee Rees film lands unparalleled in American cinema as an acutely observed examination of strait-laced parents trying to deny a child’s homosexuality while all the time knowing better, and Alike does a better job than many young women of negotiating life between two distinct universes, protecting herself until it is time to break free. (Directed by Dee Rees. USA, 2011, 86 min)
